Nick GrahamSTUDENTS are fighting over every job after graduate vacancies fell by a quarter this year.

The Association of Graduate Recruiters said its figures show students leaving higher education this year face tough competition.

In the UK, employers are receiving more than 50 applications for every job.

But managing director of OSA Recruitment Nick Graham (pictured) said that despite the current market, students should not give up the search before it has begun.

‘Graduates need to step up their game. With an oversupply of applicants, there is a greater need to differentiate and raise their standards,’ he said.

‘They need to be going back to basics. Particular care needs to be taken over applications – CVs need to be strong and concise and interview techniques must be well-honed.’

He said employers were demanding more from candidates and that applicants needed to be prepared.

‘They need to be passionate about their prospective job, have done their research and show insight and knowledge of the organisation.’
