Vaccine still months away

A VACCINE for swine flu is still months away for islanders.
Guernsey has an order in place to receive the treatment, which would be prescribed to people considered ‘high risk’. Following that, it would be administered according to clinical need.
The Influenza Pandemic Expert Advisory Group met this week to discuss the number of patients with flu-like illnesses in the islands.
It was confirmed that none had been seriously ill or required admittance to the hospital’s intensive care unit.
‘The flu-like illness currently affecting the Bailiwick seems to be a relatively mild form and most people have fully recovered within a week,’ said deputy medical officer of health Dr Brian Parkin.
‘The advice of staying off work for a few days, resting at home, taking the usual flu and cold remedies and drinking plenty of water seems to be doing the trick for the vast majority of people.’
