MORE than 3,000 people have signed a petition urging the States to say no to Public Services’ £93.5m. waste plant.

Chartered accountant Sarah Evans, representing the Say No Campaign, yesterday handed the document to Deputy Dave Jones to take to the States.

But Public Services minister Bernard Flouquet has accused such groups of running a successful but highly negative campaign not supported by the majority of islanders.

The petition came a day after a protest march against the proposed incinerator at Longue Hougue. Attendance estimates varied from 300 to 500.

Deputies will vote this week on whether the Suez Environnement plant gets the go-ahead.

Mrs Evans said everyone from teenagers to pensioners had signed the petition over a 10-day period.

‘There are a large group of us who are concerned [about PSD’s proposals]. We are not wedded to one particular alternative, although we are aware of them.

‘I’m hoping we will get a good response from deputies. If they don’t listen to us, then they are not doing their job,’ she said.

Deputy Jones will take a sursis to the States this week asking members to evaluate Public Services’ preferred option and other waste alternatives.

Since when has he talked to one islander? Let alone the majority!

On what basis does BF make the statement that the majority of Islanders support the PSD proposals? I do not know a single person who supports their proposals and it is a much discussed topic of conversation. I didn’t go on the march and I only know one person who did so there must be vast numbers out there who are opposed to PSDs proposals but who are just sitting back waiting to see that our deputies make the right decision.

PSD should have presented different options to the States, they have failed in their job and BF should now fall on his sword.

No doubt there will be another letter in the Press explaining he wasn’t deliberately misleading as he didn’t realise he was asking the wrong question.

I have never trusted anything that comes out that mans mouth (flouquet) and its statements like that which i feel proves my point. I agree with russm as i also have spoken to people on this with very few in favour i think maybe 1 in 10 at the most support it.
Maybe he wants to punish us for not laughing at his joke?.
