THERE was bitter disappointment for Guernsey’s Matt Le Ber (pictured) in Ayr yesterday when after, a great group campaign, he crashed out of the quarter-finals of the World Bowls Champion of Champions tournament.

But he hid his dismay and smiled broadly when he learnt that his girlfriend, Lucy Beere, had hit top form to clinch a place in this morning’s semi-finals of the women’s event.

In fact, there is the enticing prospect of an all-Channel Islands final of a world event, because Jersey champion Lindsey Greechan is still going strong in the other half of the draw.

‘I must admit I played well in the quarter-finals,’ said Beere after beating Holland’s Saskia Schaft 11-4, 11-1.

‘It was the best I’ve played for a long time – and certainly the best form I’ve shown in these championships.’
