Third of workers want job change

Nick GrahamA RECENT survey suggests more than a third of workers want to change jobs and careers, but only once the recession is over.

The findings were released by the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development after it surveyed 3,000 workers in the UK.

OSA Recruitment managing director Nick Graham, pictured, felt the survey was fair in terms of people waiting for things to get better, based on the snapshot of the Guernsey recruitment market his company saw.

‘People are cautious at the moment and I think many of them wonder if they move jobs would it be a last-in, first-out scenario [if anyone was laid off].

‘As a result, many people in Guernsey who were looking for a new job are keeping their head down.’

But AP Group chief executive Gina Le Prevost said that while it was no surprise workers were biding their time before making a change in the current climate, she doubted that it was such a high percentage who wanted to change.

But she did accept that there were a lot of unsettled people at the moment.

‘There are various reasons for that. Every company is scrutinising its operations and the international ones will inevitably be comparing the performance of the Guernsey office with those in other parts of the world. If the senior figures let the local staff know that’s what is happening, it can place doubt and worry in people’s minds.

‘Those senior figures themselves may be feeling frustrated that they are having to act on decisions that are being made elsewhere. This all makes staff want to go to a job which has got positive vibes and where people are happier.’
