Employers keen on raising the retirement age
Wednesday 29th July 2009, 2:29PM BST.
COMMERCE and Employment minister Carla McNulty Bauer has backed proposals from Social Security to raise the retirement age, which will be debated in the States this week.
Social Security wants the Assembly to increase it to 67 in a move to add to the money in the island’s pension pot. If the current age of 65 were to stay, the fund could be exhausted by 2040.
The proposals are not due to come into place until after 2019.
Deputy Rhoderick Matthews will bring an amendment to remove the upper earnings or upper income limit for employed, self-employed, and non-employed people, including those over 65, from 2010.
That would see those earning more than the current limit of £69,108, paying a sum linked to their income.
The current limit for employers is £115,128.
Deputy McNulty Bauer (pictured) said she did not believe the retirement age proposals would have a huge impact on employers or the workforce.
‘At the present time, there are no identifiable barriers to people at or around retirement age remaining in work,’ she said.
‘Commerce and Employment conducted a survey of all local employers last summer concerning flexible and family-friendly employment policies and it revealed a genuine appreciation of mature workers. Some 71% of employers agreed that encouraging people at or around retirement age who can continue to be productive to remain in employment would make a positive contribution to the labour market.’

It does make me wonder how old the people are who are implementing these new laws, they’re probably all nearing retirement age so it won’t apply to them!!!!
I’m all for making more money to put in the pension pot but just feel that by the time I reach the revised retirement age, in 38 years time (scary!!!) we will probably be expected to work until 75!!!!
As i understand it you don’t reach your 65th b-day and then get booted out the door, you can choose to keep working!!!
And if older poeple are more valuable to a company then how come it seems to be that people in their 50′s who have been made redundant struggle to get a job!!!
Reduce discrimination, bring some, any employee laws into Guernsey and then have a think about it!!!!

I agree, I am your age and we probably will end up working into our 70′s when the time comes.
If there’s not enough money in the pot for our pensions then the benefit system urgently needs to be reviewed. The States need to stop people abusing it by making it a far less attractive option than it is. There are young people and single mothers who get more on the dole/in benefits than they would by working.I know that there are single mothers out there who do work but there are too many who don’t.
The taxpayers’ money which is being frittered away in undeserved benefits should be put to better use i.e pensions for the people who are actually working and paying their stamp. It’s high time an end was put to the States handing out OUR money in return for nothing.

so carla mcnulty-bauer supports raising retirement age what a surprise! I take it she will show everyone a good example and pledge to work till the bitter end even if it is as a part time worker (a states deputy). Maybe , just maybe in light of proposals to raise the retirement age the golden generation picking up their full pensions now will stop whinging and enjoy their retirement at 65. Something us younger folks will not see.

I agree with cheesedoff.
What’s the point in working for even more years to get not a lot at the end of it and in a lot of cases not have much time left to enjoy it?!!!
Surprised they haven’t suggested that we go back to the olden days and start sending kids out to work at the age of 10 just to make sure that in the 60 years they work they might, just might have a pension!!!!
I understand that some people genuinely can’t work but there are far too many people over here who are taking the p*ss!!! Some may never have even paid their stamp as they got kicked outta school at a young age and went straight on the dole!!! All you have to do is walk pass the social on a Thursday morning to see who our hard earned money is supporting!!!
Wake up States of Guernsey!!!!
