Twice as many applicants for police officers as last year
Sunday 2nd August 2009, 11:44AM BST.
GUERNSEY Police has received twice as many applications from would-be officers this year compared to last, it has been confirmed.
In a development likely to be seen as highlighting the problems faced by islanders in getting work, the force has received 68 applications in total, covering the positions of constable, special constable and cadet.
There are 12 vacancies for this year’s intake.
Chief Superintendent Mike Watson confirmed the significant increase in interest.
‘The Guernsey Police are reporting this year’s recruitment process is well under way and has seen a substantial amount of interest when compared to previous years,’ he said.
‘Firm applications are twice those received in 2008 and keen interest has been shown in positions on offer for cadet and special constable.
‘Hopeful candidates range from school leavers through to the more mature entrant and early signs indicate that full compliment could be reached in terms of available places on the 2009 intake.’
Supt Watson said the full establishment for Guernsey Police was 177, as governed by a 1998 States resolution setting numbers.
‘Our initial training programme will cater for a maximum intake of 16 student officers per year,’ he said.
‘Like any other organisation, our establishment of attested police officers fluctuates during the course of any 12-month period. Presently we are working on the basis that we have 12 vacancies for this year’s intake.
‘This figure will place us very close to the current overall establishment figure for the Guernsey Police.’
