Team for Delhi set to be biggest yet

GUERNSEY’S Commonwealth Games team for Delhi in 2010 could be bigger than first thought, admits chef du mission David Harry.0641255

But, ultimately, the size of the Sarnian team may depend on what funds can be found.

‘We would imagine it will be the size of the team which we sent to Melbourne, which was 29 competitors,’ said Harry.

But with many more likely to have met the selection criteria now in place, that may not be enough places and Harry admitted that the Guernsey Commonwealth Games Association had considered that eventuality.

‘We are looking to fund some additional members, but the bottom line is that they have to be of the right quality to compete at Commonwealth Games level.

‘The various competitors are reaching their targets, so it is looking like a fairly healthy-sized Guernsey team.’

Meanwhile, the GCGA say that plans are well ahead for the Games in India, which run from 3-14 October 2010.

The association has appointed Harry as chef du mission and Angela Stuart as general team manager.

Harry filled the role of general team manager in Melbourne in 2006 and again for the Commonwealth Youth Games team in Pune in October 2008.
