Needing to beat Yorkshire and Humberside Three for second place on Friday, they turned in a brilliant performance to win 5-3.

‘A silver was a really excellent effort,’ said coach Marc Le Page.

‘This was the first time that four of the team have been to the Special Olympics and they stepped up to the challenge. I am very proud of my team.

‘Well done boys.’

Having lost 7-0 to gold medallists South West earlier in the day, Guernsey then had to fight it out with Yorkshire and Humbershire Three for the silver.

In front of a large crowd, the opening minutes of the match were tight and nervy as neither team wanted to concede.

But Guernsey’s star player ,Aaron Moore, soon made the breakthrough, slotting in from close range.

Moore scored again before the Yorkshire team responded with two goals in quick succession to level things.

However, Richard Luxon took it upon himself to ensure that the Greens would be ahead at half time by scoring a stunning effort into the top corner.

In the second half the Sarnians pressed to extend the lead and did so by way of a Yorkshire own goal and a typical powerful finish from Chris Foss. The Yorkshire side did manage to get a goal back but the damage had been done and Guernsey hung on to win 5-3 and claim a well-deserved silver medal.Special Olympics Summer Games: Silver medal success
