Rifleman Alex enjoys feeling of public support in Leeds
Tuesday 4th August 2009, 11:30AM BST.
A GUERNSEY soldier has criticised the UK Government for its lack of support for the armed forces.
Former Grammar School student Rifleman Alex Ward thanked the public who turned out to cheer his regiment on as it marched through Leeds.
But he contrasted that with the Government’s attitude.
‘Even though it was raining, a lot of people turned up and were cheering and shouting and we all enjoyed it,’ he said.
It felt really good to have that support, he added.
‘Even though sometimes you don’t get the support from the Government, you get it from the people who give up their time to come and see us and pay respects.
‘There is often something in the papers about shortages and stuff going wrong – it is good to feel some public support.’
The 19-year-old is part of the 5 Battalion Rifles which now holds the Freedom of Leeds. This allows them to march through the city in full uniform and with weapons.
‘Our regiment was one of the first in during the invasion and last out of Iraq – in May this year,’ he said.
When asked how his own experiences during a year and a half in Basra had affected him, Mr Ward said: ‘Going out there means you appreciate what you have at home a lot more, especially at Christmas time with your family.’
In the week before the parade, Mr Ward was presented with a medal for completing a tour in Iraq by the Countess of Wessex, who visited his station in Germany.
He is now home for five weeks and plans to spend it relaxing and catching up with friends and family.

I can quite understand his feelings about the way they treat the military,
Through out the years when in trouble call out the soldiers; all quiet again; treated like dirt.
It has always been that way; and I talk from experience.
If you care to read Rudyard kipling’s works you’ll see how the ordinary ‘Tommy’ was treated.
It was Tommy this and Tommy that, and the drums rolled—
Well done ‘matey’ for pointing it out; Because in my day to contact any news service was an offence; and punishable by law, Army Law.
