AN ORGANIC grower is sending out leaflets to assure her customers that her specially-grown food really is worth buying.0817752

The Food Standards Agency said last week that organic foods did not have any important differences in nutritional content compared with conventional food.

But Guernsey Organic Growers owner Anne Sandwith said her customers knew that organic food was beneficial for their health and the environment.

‘I hope the report will not discourage customers, as that is not the whole story,’ she said.

‘There is a big difference between organic food and conventional food.’

She felt the report had misled the public.

‘It is a very narrow study and there is more to it than meets the eye.

‘People see the headlines and wonder why they should pay the extra for organic food, but it does not take into account there are more nutrients in organic crops.’

I have a lot of respect for Anne Sandwith. While most of us thought “organic” was someone who fixed church pianos this lady was well ahead of the game on issues such food sustainability and environmental responsibility.

I totally agree with you Neil. Annie has worked tirelessly on leading the life she believes in, and growing the food that enables many to reduce their impact too. She has campaigned for Guernsey to be more sustainable since the 70′s, through a period when such concerns were so far off most peoples agenda as to be invisible. Its certainly not been a path paved with gold…. its been, and continues to be a real struggle, but she certainly holds the moral high-ground.

I am full of admiration for her.
