Slick response to oil spill exercise

GUERNSEY is prepared for a major oil spill at sea, according to a leading expert.
An exercise three miles south-east of the island yesterday tested what would happen in a worst-case scenario.
In it, 200 tons of oil was ‘spilt’ into the sea following a collision between a passenger ferry and tanker.
The programme was designed and run by Oil Spill Response, an international company contracted by the States to provide resources and help to the island should it have to manage a major oil spill.
‘200 tons would be big for the island, but it is not beyond the realms of possibility,’ said Andrew West, the company’s maintenance supervisor.
He said being prepared was the best anyone could be – and Guernsey was.
