Scooter rider, 23, killed in St Martin’s filter pile-up
Friday 7th August 2009, 2:01PM BST.
A MOTORCYCLIST was pronounced dead at the scene after a multi-vehicle collision at the Grande Rue filter junction in St Martin’s yesterday afternoon.
Police said the 23-year-old man would not be named until next of kin had been informed.
A red Volvo estate, a dark-grey Toyota and a silver Vauxhall were all extensively damaged and debris was strewn across the road.
People in the area were shocked at the sight and some were visibly upset.
Wendy Baudains, who works at St Martin’s Pharmacy, was walking back there when the collision occurred.
‘I was stood by the old chemist shop [now Ogier’s] when I heard an almighty squeal of tyres and a loud bang,’ she said. ‘It sounded as if a skip had fallen off a lorry.
‘I saw the Vauxhall spin around and rock when it stopped. There were bits flying everywhere. I ran into work and asked the pharmacist to come outside.’
Mrs Baudains’ colleague, Catherine Sarre, was just as shocked.
‘I was in the shop with the door shut and I’ve never heard a bang like it,’ she said.
