Allen is back to boost Rangers
Saturday 8th August 2009, 2:00PM BST.
ROSS ALLEN’S American dream is over.
The Rangers and island striker, who was crowned the 2008-2009 Division One player of the year, went over to the US this month and had trials with Austin Aztex.
Sadly for him, but no doubt agreeably for his Guernsey club and island manager Tony Vance, things did not work out for the 22-year-old and he came back to Guernsey this week.
‘It was a bit of a nightmare,’ he said.
Allen had hopes of following in his father Craig’s footsteps, who had played professionally in the States.
Allen junior joined the USL First Division side for a couple of training sessions.
However, he suffered from the fact that it is nearing the end of their domestic season and they were not looking to recruit any more players.
‘I didn’t play my best when I needed to and it was bad timing for them,’ he said.
‘They are struggling in the league.’
The Sarnian was also not smitten with the place.
‘I didn’t fall in love with Austin,’ he said.
‘I didn’t feel that I would get settled. I couldn’t really see myself living there.
‘But you’ve got to look at the positives. It was good to go and train with a professional team.’
Allen said he may look to go back to America in March and April when it is their pre-season, or he may try the UK.
‘I’ve got some contacts over there,’ he said.
‘I need to go somewhere where I feel settled. It’s about being somewhere where you are comfortable.’
In the meantime, Allen has committed himself to Rangers this season.
There were rumours that he was on way out of the St Andrew’s club but he has dispelled these.
He is happy with the signings of defenders Sam Stables and Jacques Isabelle who both came from North.
‘They are solid players and they are up for a battle,’ he said.
‘They are the type of players we need.’
