PINTS of Liberation Ale are helping troops injured in Iraq and Afghanistan.

For every pint pulled, 10p has been donated to armed forces charity Help For Heroes.

Local charity representative and former soldier Ben Remfrey said the money would make a real difference. ‘It’s not just about physical injuries, but also mental ones,’ he said. ‘Also people do not realise how many people are injured. For every one person killed, more than a dozen may be injured. It is important they get care.’

He has been following his former unit, which is in Afghanistan.

‘Last year three men lost limbs and seven men were shot, yet nobody hears about it,’ he said.

‘I wanted to do something.’

Former Grammar School student and serving soldier Alex Ward, 19, said the work done by Help for Heroes was vital.

‘People get wounded and unless the media covers it, they are forgotten,’ he said.

‘So the work by Help for Heroes is really important.’

Mr Ward is currently home on five weeks’ leave from the 5th Battalion, The Rifles. ‘I’m really enjoying being back and seeing friends and family,’ he said. ‘I just like being back. Being in Guernsey is as good as a holiday.’

Liberation Ale, which is brewed in Jersey, was launched in May and was the best-selling beer at the Great British Beer Festival in London.

Liberation Group managing director Mark Crowther said it was pleased to give the donation. ‘I think that the public liked the idea of toasting the troops to make a donation. We’re all too aware of the risks that our armed forces are taking, so we’re both pleased and proud to help.’

He admitted he was surprised by the beer’s success last week when more than 1,000 pints were pulled on the first day of the Great British Beer Festival. ‘I think it was successful because it was sold as a Channel Islands ale and it is also well-balanced.’
