Fears for trees if road widened
Tuesday 11th August 2009, 2:00PM BST.
WIDENING L’Hyvreuse could harm historic trees, according to Men of the Trees local chairman Richard Loyd.
Public Services has applied to widen the St Peter Port road and an area of 2.5 by 175 metres would be taken from the edge of Cambridge Park to make the road wide enough for two-way traffic and on-road parking.
Mr Loyd suggested stopping parking along the road would be a better option.
‘It would be cheaper and save a lot of time,’ said Mr Loyd.
‘They claim it will only be widened by 2.5 metres, but once they have inserted things like drainage ditches it will affect the land outside that area.’
Churchill Avenue, which runs parallel to L’Hyvreuse, is lined with semi-mature lime trees which were planted in 1965.
While they are several metres away from the road, some of their roots could stretch to within 3 metres of the current roadway.
Mr Loyd is very concerned that any work done in the area could damage the trees.

Voice For Victims
Voice for Victims is a campaign aimed at promoting the rights of those affected by child sexual abuse.
A cheaper option would be to just move those ridiculous white stones over a bit to give cars space to get around other vehicles in emergency situations.
Isn’t it about time that honest Guernsey people told these vandals to get on their bike or their boats and push off.
For years the road has been repaired and no problem.
Now suddenly some upstart of a so called politician wants get his name in good books with other business people and to ‘L’ with the local people, on yer bike.
