OAPs were left with no heating or cooker

An oap couple were left without heating or cooking for six days after Guernsey Gas cut them off – because it did not like their kitchen cupboards.
Author Michael Milford, 71, and his wife Joan, 66, said their ‘world was turned upside down’ by the move.
‘We called the gas company to our house [to turn off the gas] as we had a leak,’ said Mr Milford.
‘They returned on the Monday to repair the leak and tested our appliances. They informed us that our cooker, which they installed seven years ago, was in a dangerous position.
‘They cut us off straight away, without warning, leaving us without heating and a cooker for almost a week.’
The engineer told the couple the cooker was too close to cupboards above it.
The incident, on Friday 3 April, only emerged this month after the couple made contact with the Guernsey Press because they are still so annoyed about their treatment.
Yet Guernsey Gas would not discuss it because to do so would be ‘unprofessional’.
‘Guernsey Gas maintains that customer confidentiality is very important. If there are doubts and concerns about Guernsey Gas’s actions, then we strongly recommend that the complainant takes the issue through an official, independent route, e.g. Corgi [installation experts] and/or Commerce and Employment.’
Mr and Mrs Milford, who have lived in their Paris Street home for 30 years, had to spend £518 installing a new electric cooker.

regardless of if GG were interpreting their guidance correctly or not, it is a BIT of a stretch to report that GG “didn’t like their cupboards”! Bit more accurate to mention that their proximity seems to have been the problem surely!?

they have done exactly the same to my elderly mother, she`s been without for 6 weeks, and they have already sent her a bill!!! she`s been a gas customer for as long as i can remember , which is well over 30 yrs! disgraceful!

Disgusting treatment of an elderly couple. Should be ashamed of themselves.

This seems to be a regulations/health and safety issue. “They informed us that our cooker, which they installed seven years ago, was in a dangerous position”
Seven years ago the regulations may have been different, allowing an installation like this. It may be an inconvenience, but if there is a fire risk etc, then GG did the right thing.

Opulence. The problem here seems to be the proximity of cupboards to the cooker. Naked flame/heat plus painted wood equals fire!!! Were the cupboards put in after the cooker was installed – if so then the Gas Company did the correct thing. Imagine what would have been said if the headline had been “Old Age Couple burnt to death because cooker too close to cupboards”

Can’t he see that the Gas Co may have saved his life ?

…………or Mike, in Winter, old age couple die of cold and lack of warm food. I too suffered from a Gas Company jobsworth who, after servicing my boiler, stuck a “Dangerous, do not use” sticker on it…reason, ventilation did not meet the new regulations….it’s a bit like a car salesman selling you a car and then adhering a sticker which says, “Dangerous, breaks are a bit suspect.”

Looks like Mr and Mrs Milford will be cooking the books with electric in the future
Wasnt it possible to move the cupboards i wonder?

Enigma and Mike seem to have grasped what I suspected the first time I read this article. There are two sides to every story.
I sympathise with Guernsey Gas – they very professionally declined to discuss private customer matters with the Press – and rightly so. Unfortunately this leaves them open to criticism based on a one-sided account.
