Find your way around the Russian business bugbears

BUSINESSES have been invited to learn their way around 0673788
Russia’s ‘nightmarish’ red tape.
The Russo-British Chamber of Commerce has asked Guernsey’s equivalent to invite islanders to a seminar on how to deal with the country’s notoriously complicated emerging economy.
Chamber’s Carrie Birch emailed members suggesting the seminar and asking whether anyone was interested in doing business in Russia.
‘Apparently the bureaucracy is a nightmare when dealing with Russia and these people would address all the processes,’ she said. ‘A lot of people are concerned about general corruption, but it is not about that – it is the bureaucracy. I think the Russo-British Chamber is trying to help people find their way around that.’
More than one respondent said they were already involved with Russia, she said.
The Russo-British Chamber originally intended to focus on manufacturing, she said, but due to interest from the finance industry it might become geared to focus on that.
‘I am also looking into speaking to Jersey’s Chamber of Commerce and perhaps doing a joint Channel Islands session.’
Chamber director Barry Cash said it was a good opportunity for local businesses to see where the world’s largest country was today and consider where it might be heading.

We and the UK shouldn’t have anything to do with what is generally accepted as a kleptocracy, that is modern Russia. Also this is the country that passed a law allowing state sponsored assination of people outside its borders. They’ve refused to extradite that ex KGB individual who is the prime suspect in the murder of that political dissident living in London. I think its needs another 50 years of proper democracy before we should start dealing with this lot. Of course that will not stop our trust companies and lawyers touting for business from there.

It is sad but depressing to read about senior members of our business community being anxious to do business with corrupt, oppressive and unfair regimes like China and Russia.

Every single rouble that comes out of Russia is bent, the fact that Guernsey can accept this money is a disgusting example of how many shades of grey management and compliance teams will cheerfully sign off on to “create wealth for the island”.
