Iceland urged to treat Guernsey savers fairly
Wednesday 12th August 2009, 2:00PM BST.
CHIEF Minister Lyndon Trott urged Iceland to treat Landsbanki Guernsey depositors fairly during meetings with key officials in Reykjavik.
States chief executive Mike Brown and the Policy Council’s adviser on European Union and European Economic Area matters, Professor Alastair Sutton, from Brussels, joined Deputy Trott on the trip.
‘We dealt with the issues of fairness and equality in a robust but diplomatic way,’ said Deputy Trott yesterday.
‘All meetings were cordial and constructive with understanding for the position of Guernsey as an island jurisdiction. We received assurances that full regard would be given to all points raised.’
He added that the distinction between the responsibilities of the court-appointed administrator and Guernsey’s government was understood by all they met.
The administrators announced last week that Landsbanki Guernsey depositors would receive a further 25% of their savings, taking their return to 55p in the £.
But those with money in the failed bank continue to lobby strongly for 100%.

Meaningless – and far too little, far too late.

Significant isn’t it !
Such a hollow meaningless statement that NO ONE has so far felt it worth a comment.
Too Little, FAR too late Mr Trott.

So, after 10 months the Chief Minister diplomatically urges Iceland to treat the LG savers fairly, thanks for your efforts Mr Trott. Why weren’t you urging more strongly when the Icelandic Government passed emergeny legislation meaning that the LG savers would get absolutely nothing back? Is it the impending legal action the savers are now taking, at their own cost, which has galvanised you or other external pressures? I will be the first to shake your rhand if before the 1 year anniversary of LG failure you secure 100% of our money back but so far i do not think that the trust I and the other 1599 savers placed in your jurisdiction and regulation has been repaid.
Stop hiding behind diplomatic soundbites and tell us what you are doing and instruct the GFSC to come clean as to their involvement prior to the bank failure.

So, 10 months down the line, CM Trott has decided that perhaps, maybe, he ought to do something about this GFSC overseen scandal. Next, if he hasn’t exhausted his paltry concern, should be high level meetings with HM Treasury and Ministry of Justice. Or will we have to wait another 10 months for that?
