L’Hyvreuse widening ‘is for the skatepark and Les Cotils’
Thursday 13th August 2009, 1:00PM BST.
RESIDENTS of L’Hyvreuse say the road could be resurfaced without having to be widened.
Neighbours spoke out after Public Services announced plans to tarmac a large adjoining strip of Cambridge Park, saying the move was necessary for the resurfacing work to be completed.
But Sheila Maubec, who has lived in the road for about five years, said this was the latest battle facing residents after recent plans to build a skatepark at Beau Sejour and develop a new constables’ office at Les Cotils.
The 57-year-old said the vast majority of residents were opposed to all of the plans.
‘We are not in favour of the skateboard park,’ she said. ‘We and our neighbours on the terrace were all furious about the idea of the skateboard park.
‘We didn’t even know about it until the constables took it upon themselves to ask us for our opinion. I wrote a long letter about it, which the constables then asked if they could pass on to Environment.
‘That was quite a long time ago, though, and we have not heard anything else about it.’
Mrs Maubec said she was worried that PSD plans to widen the road were connected to objections regarding the skatepark.
‘I just have this nasty feeling that they knew one of the objections to the skateboard park would be about access,’ she said.

Mmmm.
I have 2 comments to make on this.
1. Surely it would be far better for a park to be built as I understand it, down around the area of the flumes etc. Let the kids have an area to ‘do their thing’ in safety and it can be controlled by the centre itself. Would that not be better than having everyone congregating in the area?
2. I agree with the residents that the area doesnt need to be widened in order to carry out resurfacing. How was it done in the first place? Could this be an excuse as the environment or whoever expect high volumes of traffic due to the offices that maybe built?
GD.

This smells fishy.

I’m sorry but what point is trying to be made here?
It’s so often the case that when something like this which would benefit the islands youngsters (and therefore the community as a whole) is applauded by the majority of the community so long as it’s not on their doorstep.
This is not that dissimilar to those people who are very keen on wind power but as soon as they find out they are going to be built near them complain about them as has been the case in the UK.
Sigh

Captain Oveur your not the one who will have to put up with the noise and rowdyism, please dont spoil a nice area of the park
ps no i dont live in the area
Report abuse
So what area of the island should we “spoil” for these “noisy” and “rowdy” teenagers?
Like I say wherever it goes people will complain if it’s on their doorstep.
Gsydonkee’s idea of down near the flumes is not a bad idea, however if we then expect the Leisure Centre staff to police this then we will need to consult with them first, and of course they will require a budget to do this.

You are so keen to help these youngsters you say; then I suggest you make part of your property available for them..
Well now; as the L’ancresse common is common land, and having been monopolised for donkey years by golfers, isn’t it about time that a section be made over for these youngsters, it’s away from most buildings.
It’s easy access. it’s fresh air, and convenient for all.
But I suppose the Idle rich will be up in arms.
Well let them, it’s our land and we’ll use as it seems fit to use.
There should not be all for one and none for us.

Where’s this skatepark going? I thought it was where the old BMX track was, around the back of Beau Sejour, opposite the Concourse? But obviously not if L’Hyvreuse has to be desecrated to make access…
I look forward to finding out! I don’t skate personally, but I am quite partial to drinking 2 litres of White Lightning cider then shouting abuse at strangers, which, to be fair, is all the skatepark will be used for…..

“You are so keen to help these youngsters you say; then I suggest you make part of your property available for them..”
Hold the phone good sir, these people don’t “own” Cambridge Park.
What if a land owner were to allow a skate park to be built on their land, I bet the neighbours would complain about that too.
My argument still stands that there are far too many people with the attitude “I’m all for it, so long as it’s not near my house”.
And I agree that L’ancresse could also be a good option. But there will be residents near there that will complain, they’ll argue that it should be nearer town, perhaps Cambridge Park.
My original comment was with regard to how the residents seemed to be annoyed in some way that the Constables had asked for their comments, and then asked if they could forward them on to the Environment department. I fail to see what the problem is with this?
Well knowing how these department works so deviously, is one good reason to get the first blow in.
We the people objected to the tax havens back in the late 50s and 60,s,
but these departments were all for it; not for the Island I might add but to feather their own nest, and so we end up with The Jolly Rodger; they’ll take our flag down soon (I don’t like it anyway, our rightful flag was better) And hoist Capt Blood’s flag,
So that is what is wrong with your Idea.
Have a referendum Island wide on all matters appertaining to any large alterations to our Island.
When the North beach was lost. we heard the Island will benefit. what a laugh that was.

I look forward to you posts. In the majority you set yourself up for a shoeing from many angles.
Well done.
Delancey park would be suitable. If not there is enough disused glass house sites that could be cleared and the facility set up on a semi permanent basis.

I tell you what we will have the skate park in the north of the Island if you will have the incinerator. We live in the only parish where the dustmen deliver

Hi darlings!
Interesting points there about private skate / BMX ramps being set up.
Sadly I know of at least 3 self funded ramps that had to be taken down because of IDC / Environment. Paul – one of them actually was on a disused vinery site.

It sounds like these residents have put 2 and 2 together to make 5. What on earth has this got to do with the skatepark? Or perhaps the road needs widening to allow skateboarders access?!
Captain Oveur has a point that there is a lot of the “not in my backyard” attitude on Guernsey. Trouble is, on such a small island, any development is going to be in someone’s backyard. What we need is a mutual respect between all parties, not snobbery – easier said than done I admit.
Dave J, I trust your comments are ‘tongue in cheek’. I stand corrected here but, were/are you not for an incinerator (GCAN/RA proposal) & the Leales Yard Development being right on your doorstep. I also do not hear you shouting from your rooftop about the emissions being indiscriminately pumped into the atmosphere from the PowerStation directly poisoning you and members of your community. If I lived down your way I would have 1,000 skate parks rather then the mass toxic Powerstation, mass toxic burner and a town killing development….

From my experience travelling down that road I would have thought that the residents would have welcomed the road widening scheme along there, it is a nightmare down there at times with all those cars parked along the pavement you just start to drive along and end up reversing all the way back, this could happen a few times. Perhaps if the residents parked their cars elsewhere they would not have a need to widen the road at all, or have I missed the point – proposed skatepark.

The playing field at Victoria Avenue next to the Track would have been the ideal venue for a skatepark or one of the fields next to The Bowl just up the road. It could have enabled a low calibre sports field to be upgraded and still used for football in one part. Its apparently no longer used for cricket so its crying out for new usage and is already of course zoned for recreational usage.

I used to live near the KGV where the ramps were stored. Kids were on them as much as possible even though they were not built. It shows that there is a real need for this facility.
However, the noise from them was considerable. Not just the kids themselves, who for the most part were just skating, but the crash each time they landed. It was annoying so i can understand others being wary of a permanent park next to them.
I can’t see problems with a park being built on the old BMX site. It does have to to be built. Not all kids are into footie or other sports that are well supported on this island.

At last sense the road needs widening to make it two way for vehicles
With cars already parked there its awful travelling that road when busy

I note that Bernard Flouquet said that the road had to be widened for “health and safety reasons” during the repairs. Feeling slightly worried now that the States will feel compelled to bulldoze my house (in a one way street of terraced houses and far narrower than L’Hyvreuse) next time my road is repaired! I have never heard such rubbish in my life….but this is guernsey, isn’t it.

….but this is guernsey, isn’t it.
What on earth is that supposed to mean?
actually its just typical of flouquet and he`s been talking rubbish for years, bet he ends up with some interest in the waste industry when he leaves the states.

They’re actually being consistent for once. I mean look at how much of the old prison they had to demolish to build the new court building ( most of which I notice isn’t on the site of the old prison … )

Perhaps I read it wrong, but is Pete ‘nimby’ Burtenshaw now complaining about the “town killing” Leales Yard development and regeneration of St Sampsons? Is there anything that this guy actually likes?!
Perhaps we could build him a little traditional fishermans cottage on a rock offshore at Rocquaine, out of sight of any progress – be it for better or worse – and for the love of God, can we take away his internet connection??

Is it the States hiding the truth or residents?
http://www.thisisguernsey.com/2009/04/14/skatepark-planned-for-beau-sejour/
I thought the skatepark was going on the Beau Sejour side of the wall? The article above seems to agree. So that would be easiest accessed from Beau Sejour car park.
I have also learned from the posts here that all those that use skate parks are alcoholic hooligans who must masquerade as skaters so they can partake in mindless violence.
Looks like there is only one mindless bunch around this area of St Peter Port.
Another high class level NIMBYism from certain deputies and their prejudiced middle class neighbours.
Now to consider the actual proposal – the road widening seems like a very sensible idea for the loss of a strip of the verge.

I know you ‘can’t please all the people all the time’, but I wonder if just for once the politicians that WE elected into office might make an intelligent, informed decision that goes WITH the general consensus of their voters and not against them?
– and yes, sorry, but I wouldn’t want a load of kids hanging around outside my house, even if they are just doing ‘what kids do,’ because I like most of the people, pay a fortune in mortgage rates etc etc and I do NOT wish to have my neigborhood/peace and quiet changed irrveocably/devalued by hoards of kids from all over the island coming to use the facilities.
Anyone who says they wouldn’t mind is either 1. lying or 2. a selfless saint – any who fall into the 2nd category, feel free to donate your garden to this lot and ENJOY!

Student Bob, you are a top man and have gone up in my estimations. The offer of a fisherman’s cottage (3 bed please) on a rock somewhere would be great accommodation for my wife, little boy and I and one really does appreciate your superb offer. With regards the loss of the internet link, well I could live with that.
one thing though, being a student how are going to pay for this cottage???

Perhaps I’ve missed something but why would Public Services want to create access for a skate park anyway?

Student Bob – High Fives to you – anyone else think it ironic that pete burtenshaw – MR I hate progress and I want it just like its always been, chooses to air his opinions (which he is of course more then welcome to do so) via the internet. Is it just me that see’s the irony???

Golden Brown, thank you for giving me permission to air my opinions via this forum, you must be very populer in the playground. So you can sleep at night, I love and fully support change and the progress which comes with this, what I do not support is the heritage, architecture & culture of Guernsey being continually destroyed.
