It’s the new ‘chief minister’ who has to prove himself
Friday 14th August 2009, 2:00PM BST.
THE row between Brecqhou and Sark’s establishment escalated yesterday.
Kevin Delaney, who runs Sark Estate Management for Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay, hit back at comments made by Sark’s new ‘chief minister’ that questioned the value of the Brecqhou owners’ investment in the island.
General Purposes and Advisory Committee chairman Charles Maitland said last week that the Barclays should have used their money for the benefit of the island instead of spending it on legal battles.
He also questioned what all the development projects funded by them were achieving ‘apart from increasing traffic’ and added the Brecqhou owners had ‘a lot to prove’.
Sark Estate Management published its new newsletter yesterday.
In it Mr Delaney said it was clear to ‘any fair-minded person’ what the development projects had achieved.
And he said it was Mr Maitland ‘as a virtual newcomer’ who needed to prove himself to Sark – not the Brecqhou owners.

Ding-ding. Round whatever.
I would have thought that the Sark establishment would have learnt by now. It seems as though they are happy to stir up unnecessary trouble but do absolutely nothing once the pot has been stirred.
What’s the point?
What has the establishment done for the islanders other than tax them on whatever they can dream up. Bitterness is not going to help anybody at all now that things have progressed to such an extent.
Can the establishment afford more legal battles? I don’t think so. I am well advised that they are struggling to cope with licking their sore wounds that have lead them absolutely no where to date.
All those that oppose what is happening in Sark have the option of lumping it or placing their properties on the market for the company to purchase and increase it ever expanding market share.
I would have thought the Sarkees would be wise to the fact that they are wanting to play hard ball with professionals and can only pitch up to the match with moth balls and sponge bob square pants as their pitcher.

For goodness sake why can’t these people behave like sensible and respectable grown-ups? This has descended into yet another juvenile spat in a school playground.
It beggars belief at such wealthy and successful individuals should resort to trading cheap blows via a local newspaper. Furthermore their latest flimsy propaganda newletter contains the random ramblings of two bitter and deluded characters. It doesn’t actually contain any news.
The owners of Brecqhou must accept that they have got to engage with the real people of Sark and not dictate their utopian vision from ivory towers.
Both parties have much to gain from some decent and honest dialogue.
Please will somebody show some leadership and put this tired spat to bed for once and for all, and for the sake of Sark.
Some decent, honourable and statesman-like behaivour is long overdue.
