L’ANCRESSE golf team captain Steve Mahy has set his sights on Hampshire Sevens success following another magnificent win.
The club’s wonderful run in this year’s competition continued yesterday with a 4-3 defeat of Rowlands Castle, the club which will host finals day, in the group one decider.
Island stars Danny Blondel, Andy Eggo and Garry McFarlane claimed three of the points for the home side, the other coming from the day’s outstanding performer, Colin Bourgaize.
‘I’m sure it was good to watch – there was plenty of excitement,’ Mahy said after a thrilling finish which saw Eggo hit a great tee shot on the short 18th to within five feet to seal victory.
‘Now we have got the finals to look forward to on the first weekend of October and it will be a great occasion.
‘Hopefully we can do it.’
However, between now and then, Mahy is sure to have quite a headache over selection.
‘I have used about 14 players this season and they have all done brilliantly. Everyone has helped out along the way,’ he said.
‘I will think about it next week and it is going to be tough because everyone has done so well. Do you go with the policy of experienced heads or because it is played off full handicap look at it from that angle?
‘The good news is that they all want to play, so it will be a big decision, but hopefully they all understand if they miss out.
‘The important thing is that this is for the club and not just the seven in the team.’
