Trappings of office put Fallaize off going for deputy minister
Tuesday 18th August 2009, 2:29PM BST.
DEPUTY Matt Fallaize has ruled himself out of the running for the deputy minister spot at Education.
And in doing so the Vale deputy hinted that ministers were becoming involved in issues with which they should not.
Deputy Allister Langlois has resigned from the Education Department after being elected as Public Sector Remuneration Committee chairman.
That leaves the deputy minister position vacant.
With Deputy Fallaize out of the frame, deputies David De Lisle, Mike Collins and whoever the States elects onto the board in September are in the running.
‘I am inclined to think that the minister would rather have someone other than me,’ said Deputy Fallaize.
‘Actually, that’s political speak – what I really mean is that she’s told me she wants someone other than me.
‘I think the world of Deputy Carol Steere and I will support her preferred candidate for the post of deputy minister. It won’t be me, but I don’t yet know who it will be.’
He added that while it made interesting speculation for the media and political followers, holding the post of deputy minister was not terribly important in terms of influence in the department.
