Child abuse jury deliberates
Wednesday 19th August 2009, 2:29PM BST.
THE jury is out in the trial of a former house parent at Haut de la Garenne who is accused of 19 counts of indecent assault.
Gordon Wateridge, 78, denies 21 counts in total including 19 charges of committing indecent assaults on five young girls, assaulting a boy, and inciting boys to commit an indecent assault on a girl.
They are all alleged to have happened while in his care when he worked at the former children’s home in Jersey in the early 1970s.
The 10 men and two women began considering their verdict at 3.35pm yesterday and were allowed to retire overnight. Trial judge Sir Christopher Pitchers warned them not to discuss any matters with anyone.
The jury was due to resume its deliberations at 10am today and will have to consider all 21 counts on an individual basis.
