Neighbours get the hump as traffic calming is set to stay
Friday 21st August 2009, 1:00PM BST.
ENVIRONMENT has decided to keep the extensive traffic calming measures surrounding the Baubigny Schools.
But neighbours are less than impressed.
Environment minister Peter Sirett said the speed bumps, traffic lights and flashing warning signs that tell drivers to slow down if they are doing more than 20mph had been accepted.
‘Following the initial test period, consultation proved it was successful so we made it permanent,’ he said.
However, Baubigny Road resident Heidi Askew said the system was flawed.
‘People still come tearing down this road sometimes because they know it is one-way and they won’t meet any cars,’ she said.
The flashing signals were effective only some of the time. ‘People do slow down if they have another car behind them watching, but not usually to 20mph.
‘The speed bumps are more effective and I wouldn’t mind if they put some earlier in the road, nearer to my driveway.’
But she was pleased that the road was generally quieter than before the measures were in place.

Why not have speed cameras instead of just sensors on the Flashing signals? Im sure a letter though someones door with a speeding fine in will slow people down. I still do not see the mentality in having 2 huge speed bumbs within 50m of each other and none along the rest of the road.

Not completely on topic but whilst they’re at it, can the Environment Department put some traffic calming measures down Green Lanes? There’s a constant stream of boy (or girl) racers revving their souped up, noisy, hole drilled in the exhaust chav-mobiles down the road at speeds just a little above the 25mph limit.

Speed Bumps Do Not Work, all they do is slow people down when they are crossing them, and then they speed up in between and immediately after. I am in the U.K. and the speed bumps are everywhere. They regularly cause damage to a cars suspension.
What about the residents nearby who have to listen to people crossing the bumps.
If the states think they are a success, they will start installing them everywhere. Next you will have speed cameras, and chicanes.
It is the responsibility of the police to monitor the speed of drivers and deal with them.

Jimmyh – although you’re right that it’s the responsibility of the police to monitor speed, personally I’d like to see more officers on the beat than speed testing.
Speed humps aren’t great, cameras aren’t perfect either – both for the reason you’ve given that people will simply speed elsewhere. However, when used as part of a general road strategy they’re not totally ineffective.
