TELEVISION presenter Miranda Krestovnikoff will be the special guest at this year’s Alderney Wildlife Festival. BBC personality Miranda is famous for presenting Coast and appearing on The One Show. She is a regular visitor to the island and will be taking part in various activities as a guide and guest during the festival, which runs from 29-31 August.

Organised by Alderney Wildlife Trust, this year’s main event is the Alderney Fete, which starts at 2pm on 30 August.

Many of the island’s clubs, societies and craft experts have been invited to set up shop at Essex Farm to show off their wares and give demonstrations and classes. Meanwhile, the trust will be laying on fun and games for all the family.

Discovery Day will take place on the opening day with islanders and visitors invited to Longis Bay to find out more about the area.

Boat trips, snorkelling, kayaking and bird watching will also keep people entertained during the three-day event, which is now in its sixth year.

AWT manager Roland Gauvain said: ‘This year’s programme is themed around what makes Alderney special.’ He added that it was hoped that the full range of gifted local artisans, innovative businesses, clubs and societies would be involved in the fete, showing off the island’s assets and helping build local resources.

‘We hope this new programme of events will whet everyone’s appetite for nature.’

Programmes and booking forms are available in many shops in Alderney and online at www.alderneywildlife.org.

Those wishing to book events should contact AWT on 822935 or email info@alderneywildlife.org

Alderney’s crack at the Eggheads has been delayed.

Six bright sparks from the island were due to take part in the BBC quiz in mid-August but had their travel plans disrupted by the commercial quay and a group of celebrities.

States member Bill Walden and States Engineer Julie Turner had to attend a special quay meeting with visitors from Guernsey and the UK on 13 August – the day the team, called Alderney Rock Hoppers, was due to fly to London for filming.

However, even if Bill and Julie had made it to London, the quiz team wouldn’t have got to take on the Eggheads. The show’s producers said the date may be subject to change as a celebrity special was being planned. And it just so happened that the celebrities took up Alderney’s place.

Joanna Parmentier, Alderney Rock Hoppers’ standby, said: ‘The commercial quay meeting meant Bill and Julie couldn’t fly to London as planned.

‘We spoke to the producers afterwards and they told us we wouldn’t have been filmed as planned anyway as the celebrity special had taken our time slot.

‘We will now travel to London in November to take part in the show.’

Alderney Rock Hoppers were invited to take on the Eggheads following a successful audition in Guernsey.
