SIX quiz-loving Herm residents last weekend flew to London to take part in the BBC game show Eggheads. The island team, named There’s No Place Like Herm, consisted of Kirsten Parker George, Jonathan Watson, Gavin Hyde, Mike Rowe, Matt Brawn and Tom Harvey.

Initial auditions were held in Guernsey last month, where they were interviewed and tested on their general knowledge, along with teams from other islands. The Herm team all passed with flying colours and were accepted for the show.

The islanders flew out on Sunday for the short, all-expenses-paid trip. At Gatwick a car picked them up and took them to a hotel. There wasn’t much time to see the sights, though, as they had an early start on the day of shooting.

Two tube rides took them to the studio at Shepherd’s Bush for a 7.30am start. After a pep talk in the green room, a little brush-up in make-up and some time in wardrobe, the team were ready for the cameras.

For those who have never seen the show, the Eggheads resident team, consisting of Weakest Link winner C. J. De Mooi, former Brain of Britain Kevin Ashman, Fifteen to One winner Daphne Fowler, former Mastermind winner Chris Hughes, Who Wants to be a Millionaire? winner Judith Keppel and Are You an Egghead? winner Barry Simmons take on a different quiz team every week for a big cash prize.

‘The Eggheads were very friendly,’ said Gavin. ‘They all came over to us before filming to have a chat, and some are much nicer than they seem on TV.’

The quizzers are all big Eggheads fans and initially thought stand-in host Jeremy Vine would be doing their show, but were very happy to find that it was regular host Dermot Murnaghan.

‘Dermot was great, too,’ said Gavin. ‘He’s exactly as he is on TV.’

Viewers will be able to see the Herm episode when it airs some time next year.

‘It was a superb experience,’ said Gavin. ‘We would definitely do it again.’
