Wall of silence goes right to the top
Saturday 22nd August 2009, 2:29PM BST.
THE wall of silence over concerns that more than £500,000 has been wasted by Health and Social Services on a bungled staff suspension yesterday received official backing.
The Policy Council joined Health in refusing to discuss the waste of taxpayers’ money in any detail.
And Health was yesterday unable to challenge Guernsey Press disclosures that its procrastination over paying a consultant not to work for two years had cost the island dear.
It also emerged that the figure could be greater than first thought.
A health professional was reportedly suspended on full pay after a clash with a boss.
It is understood that Health and Social Services employed a locum to cover the post.
The Policy Council, which employs all civil servants, was tight-lipped.
Deputy chief executive Nigel Lewis (pictured) said: ‘These are matters between the employer and employee and it is the Policy Council’s policy not to prejudice either the outcome of such cases nor affect the reputation and career prospects of existing or former staff by discussing such matters with the media.’
Health released a short statement that said the articles and the opinion column in Thursday’s Guernsey Press ‘contain many inaccuracies and appear to be based largely on incorrect supposition.
‘The Health and Social Services Department supports the statement provided to the media by the Policy Council,’ it added.

Voice For Victims
Voice for Victims is a campaign aimed at promoting the rights of those affected by child sexual abuse.
How dare he say it’s nothing to do with people , but between employer and affected.
Doesn’t he realise that any money used is the Taxpayers money used recklessly.
If there is any justice at all in Guernsey these people will and should be brought before a court of law.

‘These are matters between the employer and employee”
Aren’t tax payers the employer…if so, don’t we have a right to know if someone is either (a) unsuitable for their position and milking the system, or(b) has been treated unfairly on our behalf and should be reinstated?
How is it that despite all these qualified and highly paid civil servants that they still get it wrong when it comes to employment law….which they are responsible for creating!

sounds as you suffer from the same kind of terminal rot that we in jersey suffer from.
you are correct it is the public purse , it your taxes, same as the squandering that goes on in jersey no doubt.
good luck with finding a resolve, please let us know what you have done and pass it on to our goverment as they need some help.
