Jersey to debate sex legislation
Monday 24th August 2009, 2:29PM BST.
GUERNSEY is lagging behind Jersey in establishing a sex offenders’ law and introducing a paedophile register.
Jersey States will debate new legislation, which would include the introduction of a sex offenders’ register, in October.
But Guernsey Home minister Geoff Mahy (pictured) said that this island’s own law was still a long way off, despite his efforts to hurry it along.
‘It is not the Home Department that is holding back from progressing the sex offenders’ law,’ he said.
Home had given the Law Officers at St James’s Chambers instruction 18 months ago, he said, and had recently issued a formal request for the law to be moved forward.
‘We have been waiting but we understand other laws have jumped the queue,’ he said.
‘We understand that while the sex offenders’ law is important, some practical laws are prioritised.’
He said after the law had been processed, Home would take it to the States to be debated.
Then the next stage could be considered.
‘I would think this will probably involve a sex offenders’ register, but whether that becomes a public one or not, I am not sure.’

Voice For Victims
Voice for Victims is a campaign aimed at promoting the rights of those affected by child sexual abuse.
Why follow the bad example of the USA by instilling Predator Panic and a public registry? Registries do not impact recidivism or prevent *ex crimes. Instead they promote fear and vigilante violence. Here is a good article on the subject:

It should be just a Paedophile register as otherwise a drunk who pinches a bottom at the Xmas Party also ends up on it. Actually in the UK they have teenagers on it who have had sex before 16 making the whole thing ridiculous.

Oh so easy to say it is not our department that is holding back-
Like some small child “It isn’t me mummy* and they call them selves law makers.
Children have more go ahead than this ruling body in Guernsey.
Get off your butts and demand in meetings that something should come about
No use slobbering like a spoilt brat, get going out of first gear. Problem is there are too many old fogies in the ruling bodies.
