POLICE have warned shopkeepers to be vigilant after a robbery at the weekend.

Dolphin Stores at La Rochelle, Vale, was targeted by thieves on Saturday afternoon who made off with £705 from the day’s takings.

Detective Sergeant Karl Zierlinger said shops should take precautions.

‘Certainly, we would like premises to have CCTV,’ he said. ‘That would definitely help us, as would simple things like not leaving cash in tills and putting it in a safe.

‘Late at night, don’t have just one member of staff, have two.’

Terry Pallot, who runs Dolphin Stores with his wife, Mandy, branded the thieves cowards, adding that the robbery was ‘typical of the way the island’s gone’.

DS Zierlinger said robberies of this kind were still rare.

‘I would say that the culture [of the island] is changing a little bit,’ he said. ‘We are seeing more offenders charged.’

The last such robbery was in 2008.

‘We don’t get these often, which is reassuring, but that’s because a lot of shopkeepers are concerned for their premises.’

The police and the general population needs to crack down on these people and ensure everyone is aware that this is not acceptable in Guernsey. If not, we will be see as a soft touch, and will be offering a welcome to offenders from France and the UK to pay us a visit, possibly with Handguns next.

Think it is too late about the soft touch part, Guernsey already has a pretty bad reputation in the UK, what is somewhat confusing is how the criminal population get away with it being such a small Island, have considered the possibility of day trippers but cant all be blamed on visitors there is proof of that when you see the type of people in town at the week-end.

I don’t understand what you mean by saying that Guernsey has a bad reputation in the UK.

I haven’t come across anyone in the UK criticise Guernsey concerning criminality.

Most speak well of the island as a holiday venue, but often mistakenly think that all Guernsey residents are extremely rich.

A bit confusing this; it says it was Saturday afternoon but the advice talks about having 2 staff not 1 in the evenings?

What about the member of staff who was on duty? They must have been terrified?

What goes around comes around and I sure hope the scum that did this to the person who was on the till, or at the counter or wherever they were get what they deserve.

Oh, and Mrs PintehPantry – nice hat. ;)

In response to MrsPinthepantry. I don’t read the daily mail. Having grown up in Guernsey and now living in Yorkshire, I daily see the sort of crime which Guernsey does not want. I am not scaremongering, but simply want Guernsey to stay a safe place to raise children and live.

If the police are not hard on the offenders (if caught) and the the public don’t just accept things like armed robberies as just a “sign of the times” then the message will be loud a clear that Guernsey does not accept violent crime.
