ALDERNEY plane crash survivors Alan and Pam Radcliffe left the island yesterday morning.

The Shropshire couple again declined the opportunity to be interviewed shortly after checking in for the 10.45 Aurigny flight to Southampton. It is thought the pair were heading home.

On Sunday they escaped the burning wreckage of the Piper PA32 Cherokee light aircraft after Mr Radcliffe, the pilot, was forced to crash land in a farmer’s field in the Voueme area after the aircraft stalled at approximately 300ft.

Mr and Mrs Radcliffe escaped with minor injuries, as did the co-pilot, who has not been named. The fourth person on board, Katie Farrell, suffered a leg injury.

She was transferred to the Princess Elizabeth Hospital for treatment to her knee and was discharged on Monday morning.

Eyewitnesses have described the passengers’ escape as miraculous.

Mr and Mrs Radcliffe stayed at Farm Court guest house after being discharged from Alderney’s Mignot Memorial Hospital on Sunday evening.

Farm Court proprietor Moira Sleeman said the couple were extremely shaken following the crash.

‘They were very shook up, tired and confused. Both of them were very grateful for the treatment they received at the scene and were impressed with the speed of the emergency services.

I think it’s a bit of a shame that the proprietor of the guest house decided to speak to the press when you consider that the people involved wanted to stay out of the media light.

I would have liked to have seen the owner respect their wishes and remain discreet.

Agreed. But part of the blame surely must lie with James Varley chasing them all over the island with his notebook and camera? I guess compassion isn’t a journalistic trait….

For those of you know anything about aircraft you might enjoy this extract from the Wolverhampton Star

“It is thought that it stalled trying to avoid a fog bank while landing on Alderney. It was too low for propellers to be restarted.”

It doesn’t help that Alderney is more than 300ft above sea level and yet they stalled at 300ft. Maybe it was AGL rather that ASL… or at least I hope so!
