Emotions run high as NRG staff clear desks

NRG HouseTHE end of NRG International locally feels like a family break-up, according to one of the few remaining employees.

Around 12 of some 60 staff will still work at the company after today, although they are also set to lose their jobs by March.

Many have been unable to find employment in a difficult market, despite months of notice.

‘Effectively, 60 people are being made redundant and many have worked together for longer than 15 years, so it is very sad – it has been absolutely horrible,’ said the long-term female employee.

She said those who had not been through a similar experience would not know how bad it felt.

‘It feels like a family break-up.’

Her colleagues had known for months that their time together was running out.

‘It has been a traumatic experience over the last few months, rather than a shock, and the last couple of weeks have been tough, seeing people emptying their drawers and furniture being taken away – it is looking bare.’

She would try to remain philosophical about the experience, she said.

‘People have been taking their personal belongings and photos and it is not a very cheery place to be, but at least we are not starving and there is no war on.’

All staff had gone through a proper process over the last months, she said.

But she was not confident about all of her colleagues finding work now.
