Social networking sites could help to open doors… but it might be to your house

FacebookEMPLOYEES have been warned to be careful what they write on social networking sites.

This comes after a teenager in Jersey was sacked after making negative comments about her boss and employers on Facebook.

Guernsey’s Data Protection Officer Peter Harris said islanders should be cautious when posting comments and information.

‘Young people are putting interesting pictures up of themselves, and then wondering why they don’t get a job.

‘People have to be very careful, especially given the shortage of jobs at the moment,’ said Dr Harris.

He said potential employees might be confronted with information or pictures at a later stage.

But he expected the current phenomenon surrounding social networking sites to eventually settle down.

‘In five years’ time, if you haven’t got embarrassing photos of yourself on there you will be considered a nerd.’

He said many current employers did not use or understand the sites.

But in 30 years’ time, when today’s younger generation were bosses, they would.

He said users of social network services should consider carefully which personal data – if any – they published in an online profile.

A wise word, although I think that a boss who cant take critism is not good boss material, shows a lot of insecurity, this is speaking as a boss myself, also if all the spare time of a boss is spent snooping around employees social media sites, says a heck of a lot more about the boss than a normal bit of banter about a boss. OK if it is slanderous or worse, but normal stuff….my thoughts is that the employee is better off not there, might also be worth a word with a lawyer about unfair dismissal, how hasnt said something bad about a boss at some point………

If social network sites affect your job in your free time ie out of working hours then where can you have fun? what people do in there spare time may be foolish but at work could have very high standards and results and i am sure everyone young and old has a few ghosts in there past no one is perfect and somebody is always watching even on this small island

Social networking sites are good as long as you’re wise about what you post. I think many people are naive about security – personally I think it’s always best to treat any information you post on these sites as in the public domain.

There is a common sense approach to all these things. For example don’t tell everyone on your twitter that you’ve gone on holiday – that’s an open invitation to rob your house, as some unsuspecting souls have discovered!
