LOCAL traders’ views will be taken into account if the Normandy Market is at the North Show next year, according to committee president Nick Dorey.

Some traders expressed frustration that the French had been given cheaper pitches.

Local traders said they had to compete with Normandy traders who paid less than a quarter of what they were charged – which was the same amount the French had paid for previous markets at North Beach.

Normandy market spokesman Roupsard Arnaud said the French were paying about £150 each.

Some local traders such as Country Bake owner Richard Hamblin and Wayne Billien of The Munch Box threatened to boycott the show next year.

Mr Dorey said it was a difficult situation. ‘We understand their point of view and we will take it into account if the market comes again.

‘But you have to look at it as a whole and think what people who come into the park would like,’ he said.

‘You have to bring in new attractions to fill the park and look after the traders – there has to be a balance.

‘We had the opportunity of the market and I thought it fitted in with the show. It was nice because we don’t often have it over here,’ he said.

Mr Dorey, who is stepping down as president in December, said he had spoken to the complainants and he felt they had left on good terms.
