Guernsey OECD team is airlifted to safety
Tuesday 1st September 2009, 2:29PM BST.
THE Guernsey delegation to the OECD Global Forum meeting in Mexico has been airlifted out of the path of Hurricane Jimena.
Chief Minister Lyndon Trott (pictured) is in Mexico for this week’s forum on tax information exchange, along with chief executive Mike Brown and deputy income tax director Richard Green.
Last night they were evacuated to Mexico City where the meeting, at which about 100 governments will be represented, will now take place.
Deputy Trott said hotel staff were cutting down the juvenile coconuts from the trees in large numbers and erecting steel water-defences supported by sandbags around the perimeter. ‘There is no sign of panic but rather a sense of “here we go again” from the hotel staff,’ he said.
The national authorities have been advising people to take all possible precautions, as the hurricane is predicted to land in south-west Mexico tomorrow.
There is a high risk that it could cause damage to property.
