THE Co-op was shocked to learn of States plans to re-consult over the Leale’s Yard development project.

Channel Islands Co-operative Society chief executive Jim Hopley said the job had already been done once at their expense.

He criticised the Chamber of Commerce for supporting the Commerce and Employment and Environment Department’s decision to repeat the work.

He said the Co-op spent years working with the departments to ensure the scheme complied with States requirements.

‘We were very surprised indeed to learn, through the media, that five months after our development partners submitted a plan to redevelop Leale’s Yard, the departments have decided a new retail capacity study should be produced before the application can be determined,’ he said.

‘Firstly, as part of the application process, we were asked to commission just such an independent report,’ he said.

‘This concluded that there was significant leakage of retail spend from the island due to the lack of on-island provision.’

It also concluded that the proposed Leale’s Yard development would benefit Guernsey and complement the very different retail offer in St Peter Port,’ he said.

‘For the Chamber of Commerce to say that the new study will protect the developers is patronising nonsense from a body with a clear vested interest,’ said Mr Hopley.

‘If it had bothered to ask it would have found out this work had already been done in depth.’

    Pathetic.
Why would anyone become a Deputy when faced with such vested interest politics?

Everything the States does now smacks of corruption.

No surprise since we are 99% socially useless.

    Yes, Arnald, you are right.
This really is verging on banana republic stuff.
Step forward at least one deputy who isn’t tarnished by the vested interests you mention. Surely someone must put a stop to the antics of these two departments, both of which are loaded Town-centric Chamber supporters.
Isn’t there a case for Scrutiny to step in and call a halt to this scandalous waste of States money and resources?

I am reliably reformed that the Public Accounts Committee is responsible for ensuring that the taxpayer is not burdened by pointless, expensive, politically motivated surveys that work against the public interest.
So come on Deputy Leon Gallienne. What are you going to do about it? If you have the power you should bang the heads of Sirrett and and McNutty-Bauer together and tell them they cannot fritter away public money on such a ridiculous exercises – and certainly not at the behest of their mates in the Chamber who have a clear vested interest here.

‘Deep Shock’ is usualy a term one expects when one hears of a sudden death or terrorist outrage.
Surely a careful review of a planning application deserves more respect and understanding from one who have served as an Island deputy in the past.
