Energy firms’ row rumbles on as GE complains over Gsy Gas advertising
Wednesday 2nd September 2009, 2:29PM BST.
THE Advertising Standards Authority has been asked to intervene in the ongoing row between Guernsey Electricity and Guernsey Gas over emissions.
The disagreement over which form of power is greener appears to date back to 2007.
Guernsey Electricity is pressing ahead with a complaint about the gas company’s advertising.
In a letter to the ASA, Guernsey Gas managing director Paul Garlick (pictured) asked it not to initiate a formal investigation after it changed the initial advert complained about in May for a more detailed version.
‘As you can see, the current advertisement provides details and source data to support our position that LPG (gas on Guernsey) is a low carbon fuel when compared to electricity generated on-island or imported from Europe,’ said Mr Garlick.
He added that Guernsey Electricity has refused to disclose the carbon intensity of electricity generated on-island.
But when asked by the Guernsey Press, the electricity company confirmed that the figure was 0.667 tonnes/MWh.
Engineering director Steve Morris responded to Mr Garlick’s letter with one of his own to the ASA.
He claimed that a carbon figure Guernsey Gas used for imported electricity was an overstatement by about seven times.
An ASA spokesman confirmed it was formally investigating a complaint by Guernsey Electricity about an advert by Guernsey Gas.
