TV PRESENTER Miranda Krestovnikoff enjoyed her action-packed visit to Alderney so much that she hopes to bring a camera crew with her next time she steps on a Trislander.

Miranda, a regular on BBC programmes Coast and The One Show, is a patron of Alderney Wildlife Trust and was the special guest at the third annual Alderney Wildlife Festival.

‘I keep trying to persuade Coast to come here. And I think The One Show might come over to do something on the blonde hedgehog,’ she said.

She spent a long weekend in the island with her husband, Nick, and children, Amelie, three, and 11-month-old Oliver.

And, from the moment Miranda and family touched down, they were kept busy.

‘It’s been non-stop ever since we’ve been here,’ said Miranda during Sunday’s fete at Essex Farm.

‘We’ve done some birdwatching, rock-pooling, snorkeling and swimming. There’s loads of stuff going on – an awful lot for a small island.’

Miranda, who has now visited Alderney three times, first got involved with the trust after a call from manager Roland Gauvain.

‘I came to Sark with Coast and after that Alderney was the only Channel Island I hadn’t visited. Roland then asked me if I’d be a patron and I said I didn’t know anything about the island.

‘He then got me to come over to experience everything and since then I’ve visited regularly.’

Miranda said she liked the island’s enthusiasm for the great outdoors.

‘I love people’s passion for wildlife here. Alderney’s a special place and very unspoilt. If you look at Guernsey and Jersey, they’re just too built up, but here there’s a lot of open space and people are passionate about their open space.’

Miranda added: ‘The wildlife’s just here – it feels part of the island. Wildlife back home has been pushed to the periphery a bit whereas here wildlife’s an integral part of life.’

Miranda went on to describe the island’s best features.

‘Alderney’s unique. The waters around the island are beautifully clear and rich in marine wildlife. There are almost too many things that make it special and I’m hoping to visit year after year after year. It’s a lovely, harmonious place.’

After her visit, Miranda is due back on The One Show sofa and will be presenting the BBC Proms from the Royal Albert Hall.

She said she describes Alderney to friends as ‘a tiny island oasis’.

‘It’s like England was probably 50, maybe 100 years ago. You can’t believe you’re a hop, skip and jump away from England and France. It’s very quiet, the people are friendly and it’s a safe place to be. It’s a wonderful place to come with the family – it’s great coming with two young children and being able to let them run on the beach. Everybody knows everybody else and there’s an amazing community atmosphere.’

Miranda is planning to visit the island next year.

‘I’d like to do some diving here. I’ve been snorkeling in the past, but not diving yet.’
