Johnson’s fine start continues

ELENA JOHNSON’S national badminton ranking should improve once more after a fine singles campaign at the Yorkshire Elite Open.
Following her success at the Kent Open where she reached the singles quarter-finals and doubles final, Johnson reached the last eight of the singles competition at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.
‘A second successful weekend in a row is exactly the start to the season that I had hoped for and quarter-final points in an elite should give my ranking a good boost,’ she said.
National tournaments are split into four circuits – orbital, satellite, challenger and elite – and ranking points differ according to the circuit level, with least points at orbital through to most at elite.
There are only three elite tournaments a year and they attract the top players in the country.
‘After the National Championships, these are the most competitive tournaments in the Badminton England diary,’ Johnson (pictured) said.
The women’s singles at the Yorkshire Open attracted the vast majority of England’s top 20 along with players from Scotland, Channel Islands and Isle of Man.
