Local support grows for Le Tissier over cheat attempt

FOOTBALL legend Matt Le Tissier is today expected to face more reaction from fans following revelations about his part in a £10,000 gambling scam.

The Guernsey-born ex-England and Southampton star, is in the island today to promote his autobiography Taking Le Tiss in which he broke the story that made national headlines yesterday.

Recalling his days as a Saints player Le Tissier, now a Sky Sports pundit, told how he plotted deliberately to kick the ball out in a 1995 Premier League match against Wimbledon.

The midfielder and his friends placed a spread bet on the time of the first throw-in. He and a team-mate planned to send the ball into touch from the kick off and beat the bookmakers who were predicting it would take nearly a minute.

But the plan went wrong when a fellow player kept the ball in play. If the scheme had come off, Le Tissier and some friends with spread-betting accounts stood to win 56 times their stake, ‘well into four-figures’.

‘Obviously, I’d never have done anything that might have affected the outcome of the match,’ he writes. ‘But I couldn’t see a problem with making a few quid on the throw-in.’

The news, which came on the same day that Le Tissier was named the number one local sporting hero in a poll of 1,000 Guernsey youngsters, brought a mixed response locally with many local fans unconcerned about the misdemeanour by the man they call Le God, 14 years ago.

I have always had a high regard for Matt le Tissier and to my son he is a football hero.
However its very disappointing to hear of his involvement in this betting scam.
Nobody is perfect but the reality is how ugly and corrupt is the so called “Beautiful Game” sadly I have to say very.
All I can say atleast Matt le Tissier has been honest to what goes on in footballs dark side.

This has only been disclosed as his book is released, just a stunt to increase sales ,happens all the time, a bit of scandal to help along the sales, and everyone goes off on one about it, if he hadn’t done a book, no one would have known, it is called marketing, get over it!
