Watson cruises it

HEATHER WATSON stormed into the third round of the US Open Junior Championships girls’ singles yesterday.0752162

The No. 11 seed had few difficulties in overcoming American opponent Courtney Dolehide in straight sets at Flushing Meadow.

Watson wrapped up the first set 6-3 in 34 minutes and cruised through the second 6-2 to be off court in little more than an hour.

The Sarnian’s match stats also read favourably after her double-fault trouble in her opening victory over Russian Ksenia Kirillova.

In comparison to 13 from that match, Watson served just five in the second round and remarkably did not allow Dolehide a solitary break point.

Watson now faces Annika Beck, who is ranked 79 in the world junior list, in today’s third round.

It is the 15-year-old German’s debut appearance at Flushing Meadow and she only progressed into the main draw as a ‘lucky loser’ after she suffered defeat in the second round of the qualifying draw.

She has since beaten Fatma Al Nabhani in three sets and Mai Grage in straight sets to reach the third round proper.
