THE Alderney Half Marathon and 10 km race was held in perfect weather
conditions last Saturday and attracted a record 67 runners, 10 more
than last year. The winner was John Terry of Westbury Harriers, Bristol, in a time of 1hr 23 min. 34 sec., which broke the course record by four seconds. Second was Jon Coote. of Jersey Spartans.
The real surprise came in the 10km race when first and second place were taken by women. Debbie Marsden of Westbury Harriers, the partner of half marathon winner John Terry, romped home in a time of 39 min. 50 sec., beating Alderney’s Nikki Neal by four minutes and the first male runner by seven.
Nikki was still suffering from having completed the Guernsey marathon six days ago, finishing a very creditable third female runner.
Many runners came from the UK, Guernsey, Jersey and France and stayed for a few days with their families, enjoying the Alderney sunshine and hospitality.
Islander Rosemary Spite Rhodes, who lives in Dubai, took the opportunity to run the race during a family visit to Alderney and raised £600 towards a community vehicle.
Everyone agreed that it was a very successful event.
