GUERNSEY’S rugby season could not have got off to a better start on Saturday.

First-team captain Simon Sharrott, who is currently assistant coach while he recovers from a knee injury, said that the 14-3 victory away to Trojans was fully deserved.

‘The game was not a great spectacle to watch but we did play some good rugby in parts, which is positive,’ he said.

The home side reportedly looked to assert a physical dominance in the match rather than playing any fluid rugby, which suited their visitors.

‘The first try for us came late in the first half with a good kick to the corner. A great set piece move allowed us to move the ball through the hands and Jason Batiste went straight through and joined up with Andy Bailey, who got over the line,’ said Sharrott.

‘The second-half score came from another great line break from Batiste through their midfield defence and he joined up with Nick Barton, who went over to secure the winning points.’
