‘We can do as well as Jersey’

Nik van LeuvenGUERNSEY will do at least as well as Jersey in its International Monetary Fund assessment, according to the Guernsey Financial Services Commission.

Director-general Nik van Leuven (pictured) was speaking after Jersey came top of 120 jurisdictions, whose anti-money laundering measures were checked.

Assessors said it complied with 44 of 49 of the Financial Action Task Force’s recommendations.

The IMF concluded that financial regulation and supervision in the island were of a high standard and complied well with international standards.

‘Jersey will be satisfied with the standards achieved in their assessment, and I am confident that Guernsey will do at least as well,’ said Mr van Leuven.

Of the three Crown Dependencies, only Guernsey remains to be looked at by the IMF in its current round of inspections.

‘We anticipate that the IMF will conduct its assessment in March, reporting later in the year,’ he said. It was first expected to be in the island in 2008.

Mr van Leuven added that no jurisdiction considered by the IMF could afford to be complacent over a satisfactory report.

‘I am sure that Jersey will be rectifying those areas which the IMF has identified as requiring attention.’

He added that IMF assessments, which focused on anti-money laundering measures and financial law enforcement, were crucial in maintaining and enhancing the Crown Dependencies’ reputation.
