Wind helps push Garland below 10.8 for first time
Thursday 17th September 2009, 2:29PM BST.
SPRINTERS like the wind at their backs and Dale Garland is no different.
But he found there was too much wind at FB Fields for the annual Burton Trophy inter-insular track and field match and his electric 100m and 200m victories in another win for the GIAAC men over their Jersey Spartan counterparts – their 11th in 12 years – did not count as new meeting records.
Garland (pictured) clocked 10.7 for the 100m and 21.3 for the 200.
It was the first time he has broken 10.8 for the shorter distance but the wind gauge reading was plus four and therefore the time was ineligible for record purposes.
It proved another good day for the Channel Islands’ outstanding athlete.
Including the relays, he competed in nine events and won seven of them in a resounding victory for the visitors.
Sadly, the same could not be said for the Sarnian women.
With only three actual senior women taking part – Debbie Doherty, Louise Perrio and Sarah Mercier – the rest of the team comprised of under-17s, some of them only 15.
Perrio won the 5,000m from Jo Gorrod – no mean achievement – while Doherty was a rock, taking part in five events.
But the scoreline still ended 115-59 in the Spartans’ favour.
