FOOTBALL for girls in Guernsey is set to receive a massive boost with funding through the FA from the UK’s largest retail chain.
In a deal brokered with the Football Association, retail giant Tesco has agreed to back the Guernsey Football Association with £10,000 funding for this season as part of its national support of the women’s game in the UK.
Guernsey FA Chairman Mark Le Tissier said: ‘Tesco is well known for saying that “every little helps”. For the Guernsey FA this is far from a little gesture and we’ve certainly got big plans to do a lot more for girls football, and, ultimately, to boost women’s football too.’
Key in the GFA’s plans is the continuation of the Girls’ Central Venue training night on a Thursday, which has developed over the past couple of years so that now regularly 80 girls from under-10 to under-16 attend the sessions.
This year’s training started this Thursday at the new venue of Victoria Avenue playing fields.
School Years 4 to 7 meet from 6 to 7.15 and the Years 8 to 11 train from 7.30 to 8.45pm.
The Tesco support means that the sessions are free and all are welcome. New players can register on the night.
