CHANNEL swimmers Becky Simmons and Paul Mason yesterday arrived home to a hero’s welcome.

Family and friends turned out with flags and flowers to congratulate the pair on completing the 29-mile swim.

They finally took to the water off Dover on Saturday after strong winds had forced them to delay.

Mother of two Mrs Simmons is the first Guernsey-born person to swim the Channel solo, completing the crossing in 11 hours and 43 minutes.

RG Falla project manager Paul Mason, 42, reached the French coast in 13 hours and 30 minutes.

He was shocked at the welcome the couple had received.

‘It was a big thing swimming the Channel, but the reception we have received is unbelievable. I’m so surprised by how many people have turned out. It’s been a fabulous experience,’ he said.

Mr Mason said both of his arms were aching but it had been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Mrs Simmons, 45, was overwhelmed with flowers and balloons.

‘It was a big thing to do for charity but it’s a relief to be back. It’s been a big journey and this [the welcome] is wonderful. This is the cherry on the top,’ she said.

She added that the swim would not have been possible without the help of Vanessa Marsh and Carol Le Compte, the pair’s support team.
