FA Cup party pooped
Friday 25th September 2009, 2:30PM BST.
THE Guernsey FA Cup will celebrate its fifth birthday without a sponsor to pay for the party.
Just how big the non-sponsored competition will be is the only remaining issue, with the GFA clubs being asked for their views on whether teams should be restricted to just one team per club, or be able to enter two, or possibly three.
‘We are definitely going to have an FA Cup. It is just a case of what format it takes,’ said GFA chairman Mark Le Tissier (pictured), who would welcome a quick return to the time when due to generous sponsorship of Fletcher Sports the winners collected £2,000.
‘We still want to continue with it and hopefully it will return to the numbers of the past.
‘The concept is brilliant and it would have continued to have been a success if the Saturday and Sunday League had not de-affiliated.
‘Hopefully, they will re-affiliate and come back to playing in it again.’
If or when that reunification happens is still open to doubt, but the GFA chairman remains hopeful and is working hard to strike a deal with the leagues.
Meanwhile, Le Tissier has again predicted an intriguing Division One domestic season.
While there appears to be two factions within the eight-team division – the haves [North, Bels and St Martin’s] and the have-nots [the rest] – early results suggest that the league is going to be more competitive and with it add to the interest.
