Alex Rabey, Rhiana Sanchez-Watts, James Le Tissier, Callum Jarrald and Ollie Denton are five like-minded people who, like others on the island, felt that there wasn’t enough going on in the Guernsey music scene, so they decided to start a band called Clones. Last month they played their first gig to a packed-out Pieces Bar.
The atmosphere inside the venue was one of excitement as the band stepped on stage to debut one of their songs called B-Tizzle.
It was an interesting choice to open with but nonetheless it had the crowd going.
Second up in their set was a version of The Prodigy’s Invaders Must Die, from the band’s last album by the same name.
It was definitely an ambitious choice but the yelping vocals of Alex Rabey coupled with the shouts of James Le Tissier transformed the track into a real crowd-pleaser.
However, the highlight of their set had to be the following two covers.
For both songs the band were accompanied by Rhiana Sanchez on keyboard, providing vocals for Muse’s Feeling Good. Throughout the song the band’s ability as musicians really shone through, with Rhiana’s warbling vocals, which would make even Muse’s Matt Bellamy tremble in his boots.
The next cover saw the band really come into their stride with a roaring version of Biffy Clyro’s Saturday Superhouse.
Callum Jarrald’s prowess as a guitarist was extremely apparent as he shredded his way through this powerhouse of a tune, much to the delight of the crowd.
The band then went on to do a series of Rage Against The Machine covers, including Killing In The Name.
Once this bout of politically charged anthems was over, the Clones settled into a string of acoustic pieces.
This went down well as it gave the punters’ eardrums a rest after the aural assault earlier on. As the gig came to a close the band decided to go out in style by repeating Saturday Superhouse as the crowd went wild.
