A LIGHT aircraft crash-landed on the runway on Saturday.

The twin-engine Beech 58 suffered a ‘complete undercarriage failure’ when it landed at 2.06pm but its passengers escaped unhurt, according to airport director Colin Le Ray.

The runway was closed, causing flight delays, until the airport fire service had cleared the plane and debris.

The Fire and Rescue Service was also on hand for support.

‘An aircraft has crashed onto the runway with two people in it who have got out. They disabled the plane to prevent it from catching fire and it has now been moved from the runway,’ said a spokesman.

No commercial flights were diverted or cancelled but private flights were.

Mr Le Ray said the runway was reopened at 3.50pm.

‘Because it suffered a complete undercarriage failure, it was difficult to move,’ he said.

‘You have to actually lift it off the runway, which takes longer.’
